5G-CLOPS: Cross-Layer Optimization in 5G Networks

This ground-breaking proposal precisely suggests an holistic approach in which network resources allocation in the UE-BS (User Equipments and Base Stations) association is undertaken by taking into consideration not only the propagation channel condition but also the operation of the IP mobility management protocols that allow a seamless mobility and avoid service disruption during the user’s movement among heterogeneous networks. This cross-layer solution could lead to a better utilisation of the network resources and to an optimised network performance. The goal is to devise a set of specialized metaheuristic algorithms for 5G networks capable of scheduling ultradense networks (UDNs) efficiently and engineering mechanisms for the automatic service management of SDN/NFV-based (Software-Defined Network / Network Function Virtualization) access networks.
