Since late 2015, Extremadura has had the LUSITANIA II supercomputer, located in Cáceres. This significantly increased the computing resources offered by the COMPUTAEX Foundation and considerably increased the power available with the first LUSITANIA supercomputer.

In November 2018, LUSITANIA II was recognized by the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities as a Unique Scientific and Technical Infrastructure (ICTS).

The technical characteristics of LUSITANIA II are detailed below:

Shared memory computing node

  • Primergy RX4770 M2 with 4 Intel Xeon E7-4830v3 processors with 12 cores each, 2.1GHz, 30MB cache (48 cores in total), 1.5TB DDR4 RAM, 4 power supplies, and 300GB SAS disks.

Distributed memory cluster

  • 10 Fujitsu Primergy CX400 chasis with capacity for up to 4 servers each.
  • 40 Fujitsu Primergy CX2550 servers with 2 Intel Xeon E5-2660v3processors, each with 10 cores, at 2.6GHz (20 cores per node, 800 cores in total) and 25MB cache, with 80GB RAM and 2 x 128GB SSD disks.
  • 168 IBM System x iDataPlex dx360 M4 servers with 2 Intel E5-2670 SandyBridge-EP processors, each with 8 cores, at 2.6GHz (16 cores per node, 2688 cores in total), 20MB cache and 32GB RAM.
  • 2 racks IBM iDPx con RDHX (water cooling) with capacity to house 84 servers each.

Cloud computing nodes

  • HP Proliant DL-380-G7 with 2 Intel Xeon E5630 (2.53GHz/4-core/12MB), one with 32 GB of RAM and another with 64 GB and two 146 GB SAS disks per server.
  • HP Proliant DL-380-G5 with 2 Intel Xeon E5450 processors with 16GB RAM and 2 x 146GB SAS disks.
  • HP ProLiant BL465c Gen8 with 2 AMD Opteron 6366 HE (1.8GHz/8-core/16MB), 128 GB of RAM, and two 300 GB SAS hard drives per server. These servers belong to the FI4VDI project (Development of a network of federated infrastructures for the generation of workstation virtualization services), part of the Interreg IV B SUDOE Program, funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
  • HP ProLiant BL465c Gen8 with 2 AMD Opteron 6276 (2.3GHz/8-core/16MB), 256 GB of RAM, and two 300 GB SAS hard drives per server. These servers and the Intel Cluster Studio for Linux software included in them belong to the SIATDECO (RITECA II) project, which is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Spain-Portugal Cross-Border Cooperation Operational Program (POCTEP) 2007-2013.
  • 4 servidores HP ProLiant BL460c G6 with 2 Intel Xeon E5540 processors (2.53GHz/4-core/8MB), 24GB of RAM, and two 146GB SAS hard drives per server. These servers belong to the FI4VDI project (Development of a network of federated infrastructures for the generation of workstation virtualization services), part of the Interreg IV B SUDOE Program, financed by the European Regional Development Fund.
  • 4 servidores HP ProLiant BL465c Gen8 with 2 AMD Opteron 6376 processors (2,3GHz/16-core/16MB), 128GB RAM and 2 x 300GB SAS disks per server.

Nodes with computing accelerators

  • Fujitsu PRIMERGY RX350 S8, with 2 Intel Xeon E5 2620v2 processors (2.10GHz/6 cores/15MB), 256 GB of RAM, and two 300GB SAS hard drives. This server is part of the MITTIC project (Modernization and Technological Innovation based on ICT in strategic and traditional sectors), which is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Spain-Portugal Cross-Border Cooperation Operational Program (POCTEP) 2007-2013.
  • HP ProLiant WS460c G6 Workstation Blade with HP BL460c G7 Intel Xeon E5645 processors (2.40GHz/6-core/12MB), 96GB RAM per server, 4 x 300GB SAS disks and 2 NVIDIA Tesla M2070Q (448 cores and 6GB GDDR5). These servers belong to the SIATDECO (RITECA II) project, which is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Spain-Portugal Cross-Border Cooperation Operational Program (POCTEP) 2007-2013.
  • NVIDIA Tesla M2070Q specialized in computing with PCI Express 2.0 connection, 448 CUDA cores at 1150 MHz with 6GB GDDR5 SDRAM video memory, each with an operational consumption of 225W. These cards are part of the SIATDECO (RITECA II) project, which is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Spain-Portugal Cross-Border Cooperation Operational Program (POCTEP) 2007-2013.
  • Asus ROG Strix NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1080 Advanced Specialized in graphics processing with PCI Express 3.0 connection, 2560 CUDA cores at 1695 MHz with 8GB GDDR5X video memory and OpenGL®4.5 support, with an operating power consumption of 600W. It belongs to the CultivData project, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), within priority axis 1, priority 1.2., specific objective 1.2.1.
  • Intel Xeon Phi 3120P coprocessor. This processor belongs to the MITTIC project (Modernization and Technological Innovation based on ICT in strategic and traditional sectors), which is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Spain-Portugal Cross-Border Cooperation Operational Program (POCTEP) 2007-2013.

  • Metadata Data Terminal (MDT) Eternus DX 200S3 (15 x 900GB SAS disks) = 12 TB.
  • Fujitsu Primergy RX2530 M1 servers with 2 Intel Xeon E5-2620v3 processors (6 cores at 2.4GHz y 15 MB cache); 64GB DDR4 RAM and 2 x 300GB SAS disks for metadata management with Lustre.
  • Data cabin (OST) Eternus DX 200 (41 x 2TB NL-SAS disks and 31 x 4TB NL-SAS disks) = 206 TB
  • Fujitsu Primergy RX2530 M1 servers with 2 Intel Xeon E5-2620v3 processors (6 cores at 2.4GHz and 15 MB cache); 64GB DDR4 RAM, 2 x 300GB SAS disks for object management with Lustre.

Network topology

The supercomputer's connectivity with the outside world is provided by a connection of up to 10Gbps with the Extremadura Scientific and Technological Network, which connects the region's main cities and technology centers. It is also interconnected with RedIRIS and the European GÉANT network.

Internally, the service and computing infrastructure is structured around:

  • Fortinet Fortigate 1000C firewalls as a perimeter security system, firewall capability, VPN, antivirus, intrusion detection, and bandwidth management per connection, configured as a high-performance active-passive redundant cluster with high processing capacity.
  • 14 switches Infiniband Mellanox SX6036 with 36 FDR 56Gbps ports for computing networks.
  • BNT G8052F switches with 48 ports and 1 BNT G8000 with 48 ports.
  • Brocade ICX6430 switches with 48 ports and one Brocade ICX6430 switch with 24 ports for communication and management networks.
  • InfiniBand Mellanox IS5030 with 36 QDR 40Gbps ports for computing networks.
